A Reason to Minimize

I found this poem on Substanceoverstuff.com . If anyone here is suffering today with the burden of having too much "stuff" to manage in their lives, and is still on the fence about minimizing, this poem might just be the push you need to start you in the right direction!

My hands were busy through the day,
I didn’t have much time to play
The little games you asked me to.
I didn’t have much time to do

I’d wash your clothes and sew and cook
And when you brought your picture book
And ask me please to share your fun,
I’d say: “A little later, son.”

I’d tuck you in all safe at night
And hear your prayers, turn out the light,
Then tiptoe softly to the door…
I wish I’d stayed a minute more.

For life is short, the years rush past…
A little boy grows up so fast.
No longer is he at your side,
His precious secrets to confide.

The picture books are put away,
There are no longer games to play,
No good-night kiss, no prayers to hear…
That all belongs to yesteryear.

My hands, once busy, now are still.
The days are long and hard to fill,
I wish I could go back and do
The little things you asked me to

Waaaaahhh! That poem is heartbreaking! I'm taking it to heart. I just cleaned out my little one's wardrobe and got TWO large trash bags of clothes she can no longer fit into. She was so upset when she went to get dressed and "couldn't find anything!". Now, everything is neat and labled. She loves it and we found a friend with a small girl who wants the clothes! Bethany, keep on inspiring us! It's really working

I forgot to mention that my daughter was upset BEFORE I cleaned out her wardrobe, not AFTER! Don't want to give anyone the wrong impression! After it was cleaned and organized, she felt like such a big girl that she could pick out her outfit and find everything so easily. Honestly, ladies--if your stuff is so disorganized that your precious children have trouble developing good habits, you have a problem. I am so glad I did this, and you, your husband, and your kids will be, too. Even if they don't say anything negative now, you just watch their faces light up as they tell you, "Mommy / Honey, you ROCK!"

So great to hear about your daughter and her clothes...it really is amazing how happy they are when you get rid of stuff- you would think it would be the other way around, but they enjoy a clutter free environment as much as we do!

Ohh, the poem is så sweet and so true.
I've got tears in my eyes
We've got a daugther who is 16 and we're still close, but she is of curse starting to try flying wings of her own
But luckily, her younger brother is only 2 1/2 , and he is going to live with us at least until he is 35, hahahahaha
