Hurray!

I'm so excited!!

I may be able to get out of the insulin shots after all!     I thought it was going to be inevitable, but maybe not.

Exercise really works!  I mean, I knew it couldn't hurt, but I didn't realize how quickly exercise truly helps your body with the blood sugar levels.

This morning, after eating breakfast, I exercised for just 15 minutes on the treadmill.  I'm not going too fast, just walking at a steady pace.  My blood sugar levels 2 hours after breakfast were only about 130, which is much better than it has been the last few days.   I was encouraged by that, but knew it still wasn't good enough.

1 1/2 hours after lunch today, I took my blood sugar again, and as usual, it was above 150.  I was starting to think it was hopeless and that the shots were inevitable.  (My goal 2 hours after eating is supposed to be 65- 120.)  I had 30 minutes before I was supposed to record the levels.    I knew it wouldn't be down that far within just 30 minutes on it's own.

I got on my treadmill for 15 minutes, then checked the levels again, drinking a full glass of water as I walked.  They went down to 128!  I was so surprised that it had had this much of an effect, that I went back on the treadmill for another 10 minutes, just to see what would happen.  (Yes, I guess I'm wasting some strips but I feel like I need to know how I can affect my blood sugar levels!).

The levels went down to 104! WOW!  This is within the accepted limit!   So as long as I exercise after every meal, I should be doing fine on my own- plus, I'll be strengthening my body for labor and delivery later on.    I am very happy!

Bethany, I didn't know you were having BG issues To the best of my knowledge, exercise at any time of the day is beneficial to those with any form of diabetes. Keep on top of this, since it is possible to remain diabetic after gestation (if you are in fact *only* gestationally diabetic). My prayers for you and your wee one!

I'm so impressed with you, Bethany. Some people would figure they had to go the way of the meds and not try to exercise, you are such a smart, good, healthy young lady. You take responsibility for finding what is good for you and your baby and find the answer in your abilities. I commend your hard work and determination. You're very impressive!

Hi Bethany! Congratulations on your prenancy!! I too had gestational diabetes with my last two children. (I have four total.) I was sure to follow that diet closely and didn't have to have shots. I'm glad you don't have to now!

Boy, you are right about the exercise making a difference! I had the most trouble keeping my blood sugar down in the evenings and a walk made all the difference!

My last two babies were born very healthy. In my last pregnancy my placenta was greatly calcified, but fortunately hadn't caused any problems to the baby. However I have had all of my children a week or two "early." May be something to watch out for as it can be one of the effects of gestational diabetes.

My A1C levels were still high a few months after having my last child which is a warning sign that you can develop diabetes. So even after you have the baby it is a good idea to still eat in a healthy way and exercise as we should all be doing anyway!!

Also be careful to stay hydrated- I had trouble with dehydration which actually can get serious. I was sick and had been up at night with sick kids and hadn't eaten or drunk much. My blood sugar was very low and I got pretty out of it and confused and my friend came over and called 911. These factors had also caused me to start have serious contractions at 7 months, so they had to stop my labor at the hospital with some kind of shot. I was slightly dehyradted and had a fever when in labor with that one and it was my worst labor of all 4.

However for my fourth child I made sure to eat right, exercise, drink LOTS of water and not overdo it and my labor with her was a breeze.

Sorry to ramble... my point is that you need to take really good care of yourself!!

Best wishes and if you have any questions or want to vent feel free to email me!

I'm concerned about gestational diabetes because my sister had it, I was overweight when I got pregnant and I'm pretty inactive. This could really help easy my mind! I KNOW I should be working out anyway, so this should really get my butt in gear Thanks so much for posting this
