Training the Cat to use the Toilet
I hate cleaning poop out of the litter box. I'm sure I'm not the only one.
I have many times entertained the idea of toilet training my cat (and the cats I've previously owned over the years), but wasn't sure if it was really possible. I used to just scoff and think "that can't really work". I have been reading over time now though, and actually saw many videos of cats going to the bathroom in the toilet, that I finally thought, you know...it can't really hurt to at least TRY. lol I decided to go for it!
So, I bought a toilet training system for kitties last week off of Ebay, and cleaned out the bathroom that we have been using for a storage room ...that will be where our cat uses the bathroom. The toilet in there still works fine and once she is trained, the most cleaning I'd have to do is flush the toilet- that is, if I am successful at training her!
According to the training kit I bought (I bought the cheapo one), it should only take a few days to completely train any cat to use the toilet... don't know how accurate that is, but it didn't take her long to use the regular litter box (less than an hour), so maybe it's possible!
I have already gotten the cat acquainted with the toilet seat cover, which is filled with litter....I poured the "enticing herbs" (which I'm pretty sure is just catnip) over the top of the litter, and she definitely seemed interested. She even dug a little hole in the middle of it while she was up there. Tonight, the first step is to close her into the bathroom overnight with the littler filled toilet cover and see if she'll go in it. If she does, the next step will be to cut a small hole in the center of the cover. Then the next step would be to make the hole larger...and so on till it is just like a regular toilet seat. Then you can just take the cover off and let her have at it!
I will be sure to keep you updated on how it goes. Has anyone else here ever toilet trained their cat?

Toilet training can work, but not on all cats. If the actually toilet training doesn't work, let me know and I can give you some easy alternatives.

If the kit doesn't work the next best thing is flushable or biodegradable kitty litter. It can be found in any petstore. There is one that is made from cedar which is wonderful in ordor absorption. And another that is just old newspapers shaped as pellets.
What you do it put a very small amount of litter in the box. Place the box securely on the toilet. When you notice that the cat uses it, you have two choices. If flushable, just dump and flush. If biodegradable, you can just toss it out a window or throw it outside. It is a wonderful tool to keep rodents out of your flower gardens! The smell of the cat will deter them. If you have a shower that no one uses or a laundry sink just rinse the box out once a week.
That is actually the easiest alternative if your cat doesn't get potty trained. Either way, these methods are kinder on the environment than the clumping kind and more natural.
Cats are actually VERY easy to train with enough patience. They are food motivated if tempted with the right food. (beware of tuna - it isn't very healthy for them. Sardines are good if it doesn't gross you out.)
The one problem with toilet training is that you have to remove their "scratching" instinct. Some cats do very well if you put a scratching post as close to the toilet as possible. Then you reprogram the instinct to scratch the post - then go potty - then scratch the post again. reprogramming is easier than removing an instinct.
I'm very interesting in seeing how this goes! I tried to potty train my cats, but one was too fat to jump up on the toilet!

I would love to see if this works! lol! I have the worst cat. He will not use the litter box anymore due to the dirtiness of the thing. Mind you he only used it for a little bit. I couldn't just clean the little box once a day...or after every time he used it...No... I would have to empty the box and put fresh litter in. But then he just went on the floor next to it. So now he's my outdoor kitty

Rule of litter boxes. Start with 2 litter boxes for one cat and then add a litter box for any 2 cats brought in.
EX: 1 cat = 2 litter boxes
2 cats = 2 litter boxes
3 cats = 3 litter boxes
moving on....
5 cats = 4 litter boxes
7 cats = 5 litter boxes
This prevents them from the "dirty" factor and you don't have to clean as often. The boxes can be right next to each other so cleaning time isn't too much longer. Usually, if you only have one cat they will urinate in one and defecate in the other. So, use absorbing litter in the urine one and just ripped up newspapers in the fecal one to save money. The newspaper one just gets dumped so you don't have to scoop it which saves time as well.

I so hope this works for you! We've considered it before, but never gone through with it. Our cats are really picky about their litter box, and if it isn't clean enough they use whatever else is handy- carpet, a laundry basket (with clothes), the bed, etc.

Looks like I'm the odd one here, but we don't provide a litter box for our cat. I'm pretty sure we did when she was a kitten, but over time she stopped using it, and we just got rid of it. She goes outdoors whenever she wants, and never has accidents in the house. She even sleeps in the house at night, when I suppose she just holds it. In the morning she is always a little urgent in her request to go outside.
Cats are smarter than most people give them credit. My little sister just trained our cat to sit on command.

My mom has a kitty door and her cat just goes outside when she needs to go. It works really well for her, and I don't think the cat ever goes in the house.
However, if this isn't an option I'd love to see if the toilet training works. Keep us posted!

When I was a kid, my cat actually did that on his own - surprised me when I walked in on him one time. He went about his business, gave me a nasty look and then when he was finished he jumped down and ran away. (Absolutely true.)
I should have trained him how to flush - he never figured that part out.

Interesting product but maybe it needs a potty training scent kit to make sure the cat develops a positive association?

A toilet is a plumbing fixture and disposal system primarily intended for the disposal of the bodily wastes: urine and fecal matter. Additionally, vomit and menstrual waste are sometimes disposed of in toilets in Western societies. The word toilet describes the fixture and, especially in British English, the room containing the fixture. In Canadian English, the latter is euphemistically called a washroom; in American English, a restroom or bathroom. The latter term often describes a room that also contains a bath tub. A room with only a toilet and a sink is sometimes called a half-bathroom, a half bath, and a powder room.
