Makin' Bacon

Someone asked how to cook bacon without it curling.   I am not sure how to do it with the thin sliced bacon (maybe someone can comment below with some advice on that), but I use the thick sliced bacon and it is pretty simple that way.   I just LOVE bacon, and was glad to have an excuse to cook some more. lol

(The pictures below are a little bit repetitive... sorry about that. There's just not much else to cooking bacon than flipping and pressing!)

I usually cut the bacon in half, so it's easier to get into the pan.  Then, I put them in, and let it get hot:

Then I use a spatula to press the bacon down while it fries.

And keep pressing it for a while...just whatever parts seem to bubble up, press them.

When they start getting darker around the edges, I flip them..

Then press again...

Then flip...

There's a stubborn piece that is curling up...

Just press it down and hold till it stays put..

Flip again...

Press...

Then, when it starts looking like this (of course, some may like it less done or more well done), I take it off and let it dry on a paper towel...

And voila, there's uncurled bacon.

So...how do you cook your bacon?  I know there are many, many other ways to cook bacon, and if anyone wants to give any pointers or ideas in the comments, please feel free!

Oh yum. I am not even a huge bacon person and yet that is making me hungry. I am going to try and cut mine like you do and use a spatula. It sounds like a good idea. Oh and I have an award for you at my blog!

Have you tried baking your bacon? My absolute favorite way of having bacon! I does curl though. You still have all the drippings on the cookie sheet so you could make gravy...yummy!

I agree with baking! It's the only way I cook my bacon now. It cooks it so evenly and it's pretty fast and doesn't make a greasy mess all over your stove top. I just put some foil on a cookie sheet and put the bacon on that. I cook it at 425 for 10 minutes or so... You could then pick up the foil and poor the bacon grease into a pan or cup for later use.

Add me to the list of those who bake bacon. I usually do 350 degrees for 25 minutes, though. I'd probably forget at 425 and have a burned mess on my hands. I pour the grease from the foil lined pan into a jar and store it in the fridge, then use a swipe of it on a paper towel to grease pans. Or, if I have some bread ends, I tear them up, pour the grease over them, and give it to my barn cats for a treat.

The ONLY way I make bacon is in the microwave. Less grease, less fat etc. Of course we only use turkey bacon in our home tho. I just have to clean the microwave then. I lay 4 or 5 slices in between 4 layesrs of paper towels (two on top, two on the bottom) and microwave it for 31/2 mins (for 4 slices etc) I knock off 30 secs for every slice I make. So not 4 mins for 4 slices if that makes sense.

I've never re-used oil for cooking. My mother never did, so I learned from her.

I also bake my bacon as well. I use pampered chef's stoneware bar pan, which is a good way to "season" your stoneware.
It always comes out evenly cooked and the perfect crispiness.

Ditto on the oven. I use a cookie sheet, and not only does it not curl up, I also don't have grease splatters everywhere, and I don't have to wait for the griddle to be free to start pancakes.

the first 2 times I cooked bacon, i did it the frying way and gave up. i just always made such a mess and the grease would pop on me and hurt. i was terrible at it! then after spending over a year without bacon (lol - we LOVE bacon around here! it was a terrible famine time!), i learned how to bake it in the oven. That's the only way I cook it now.

Here's another oven-baking bacon maker! I cook mine at 375 and just go by my nose to turn it and take it out.

We've just recently started cooking it in the microwave when hubby wants a late-night, one-person serving. It's quick and easy. Place on plate over a layer of paper towels. One minute, flip, one-two minutes (depending on thickness).

I have made my bacon in the oven before, but usually it's only when I'm doing it bulk. I did it with my once a month cooking! It really does do a good job.

I bake it too. I bake the entire pack of bacon at once so I can just warm the leftovers for the next day.

I put the bacon on a cooling rack and put the cooling rack in rimmed cookie sheet. Cook it at about 375 or 400 'til done.

It doesn't sit in the grease. It doesn't curl. And best of all, it doesn't need constant attention while cooking, like pan frying does.
