Fish Tank Progress #2

Okay....I know what you've been probably wondering after seeing the last post about my husband's new venture:  Why is my he building a fish tank out of WOOD, and not just glass?  Don't we know that wood leaks?

Well, surprisingly, it's actually possible to build a fish tank out of wood!   Others have done it, and if they can, I know James can too.

Here are some examples of fish tanks built out of different kinds of wood:

Here, here, and here.

I can't be totally sure, but I think this page has part of the plans my husband has been following for the tank, and this page has more (There are others, with picture instructions, but I don't know where they are). So, if you're interested to learn more about it, I think that page will be helpful...also, try googling "plywood aquarium", and you should find lots of results.

Here are more progress shots-

You can see one of the lights that my husband got for free from his brother...

Here he is, barefoot, and drilling the sides together... doesn't he look intense?

Here it is after some more work had been done to it...this side is the front:

Here he is measuring out where to put the flaps and handles on the top.

Applying waterproof adhesive...

Oh yes, this is all going on inside the house.   Very noisy!  Right here, he was cutting out the openings for the aquarium lights...

Here they are...

Here, he covered the lights and put them on the fishtank in the dark, so that we could take a look...

I think it's going to be really cool when it's finished...

He has just gotten through ordering "aquarium construction resin", and "epoxy colorant pigment paste" from Ebay (to waterproof the inside) and hopefully it'll get here soon so that he can paint the inside - Then he can work on the stand.

    Bethany,

I tried to e-mail you but was unable to use the link for your e-mail. I know this is not about the fish tank but kimchi... We are going to town Thursday and possibly Friday so I was hoping you might be able to answer some of my questions. We live 60 miles from town so we probably won't be going for another month or so. Now that your kimchi has set a while how do you like it? Is the fish sauce absolutely necessary? My husband is allergic to all forms of fish and poultry so I usually try to avoid those ingredients. I know he can eat kimchi as he just got back from 3 weeks in Korea and ate it while there. Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated!! I love kimchi but do not want to make a huge batch due to limited storage space. Our refrigerator is usually pretty full trying to keep 3 boys (ages 9 to 14) filled.

Thank you so very much!! If you want to e-mail me please feel free!!!

WOW, that is amazing! I would love to have a fish tank that big. There is a fish tank in the nursery at our church that Nater just loves. We have tried many different tanks at home but we never have much luck. So, we have been "fishless" for a couple years now.

Wow, that's going to be really nice! A chinese restaurant I used to go to had a big wooden fish tank. I didn't even realize that it was wood until I looks at those pictures! (That last one looks amazing! Who knew something like that could be made of wood)

Where are you guys putting it, and any plans for what will go in it? (I hope I'm not asking something you've already answered)

No problem! We are planning to put the tank in the livingroom, so it'll be the first thing seen when you walk in the house...don't know yet whether it will be freshwater or salty, but probably will do fresh.

I think salt water is harder to take care of. But they are soooo cool! My brother had one and a girl I went to college with had a salt water tank. Freshwater are cool to though.

My bil holds the patten on a pyramid aquarium. The opening is in the side but the water does not come out. When the first get near the top, they swim upside down. The light is on the bottom and shines to the top. At the top, it appears as a rainbow. I've been after him to make one for me for years but he is on to something different now.

James, the type of glue he used was 3m marine adhesive sealant number 5203, and you can get that at Home Depot. That's what he used to glue the whole thing together.
He is using brass hinges. He coated them with epoxy to ensure no rust would develop.
I hope this is helpful and good luck on your wood tank!!
