Bonnie's Fruit Filled Pockets
Two days ago, I was walking into the kitchen, and this is what I saw:

Bonnie was cutting up apples.
'
This is pretty usual, but I noticed her cookbook, laying on the stove, opened to this page:

The recipe was "Apple Filled Pockets". I love this book, because it shows kids step by step pictures on how to cook different things.
Anyway, at first, I thought about telling her to just eat the apples and not to try cooking the pockets (I was SO tired at the time and didn't really feel like tackling a big mess)- but then thought this was a great opportunity for her to learn more about cooking. She ALWAYS wants to help me cook, every single time I am in the kitchen - and obviously she was trying to become more independent and learn to cook on her own. I thought about letting her do it all herself, but looked at the book and figured she'd need a little help getting all of the ingredients together. Some were hard to reach. After getting them together, I tried my best to step back and let her do the rest of the work herself. I just had to remind her to keep looking at the instructions before trying the next step.
I love how I can see that feeling of accomplishment in her eyes when she gets to do something like this (almost) on her own. Here she is rolling out the dough.

Cutting circles with the biscuit cutter:

Filling the pockets with plum jam and apple bits:

Then she sealed the edges with a fork, then placed them on an aluminum foil covered baking pan (that saved time cleaning!):

And then I stuck them in the oven for her...they cooked for about 20-25 minutes and they were done!

They were really good too! Tasted like a buttery biscuit stuffed with sweet fruit filling. Which is basically what it is!
I was very proud of Bonnie for her work in the kitchen.

Oh and just have to share this- after she finished cooking, she used some of the leftover dough to build a portrait of me on the biscuit cutter. Yep, that's me:

She's going to be just like you!-The real you, that is! Not necessarily the biscuit dough version!

Good job mama! It's hard to step back and let them learn sometimes, but sounds like you really did her a service today
They look DELISH! I would be just about busting with pride right now, so I imagine a bit how you feel. And how she feels! When I was 6 or seven I "wrote" my own cookbook, full of foods I cooked myself. Things like "Sandwich Surprise" which involved cutting up cooked hot dogs and cheese and tomatoes and putting it together with bread and cream cheese. Yup. I still remember it. My Grandma helped me with that one

This is awesome. I love reading how you train your kids, hands-on, with real life. What a precious lesson from a loving mommy.

Sarah, it's good to see you...I wanted to comment on your page but I have lost my myspace account information so I can't do it. I wanted to tell you how adorable your baby belly is!

Oh such preiousness from the little one! I know you're a proud mama!
That book looks like a real blessing! Maybe you can have Bonnie make something for the family once a week from the book (with your help of course).
Thank you for sharing pieces of your day with us!
God Bless,
Dawn

She just decided to make something out of her cookbook on her own? How cute! Another reminder, though, of how fast they seem to grow up!

Tiffany, she loves to look through cook books...she is always asking me if she can make this recipe, or that recipe. She writes down the ingredients from recipes she likes sometimes and asks me to buy them when I go to the store so she can make them. I don't always do it, but when I do, she is thrilled!

Wow! What a great example your creativity has been to her. Definately proves that children see and hear everything and the best lessons are caught, not taught.
