Tutorial on How I Make Sushi

Someone asked me the other day if I would make a tutorial on how I make sushi.  I am happy to do this for you!

Before I start though, I have to add a little disclaimer:  I know I do not make sushi the traditional way...I'm sure I do a lot of stuff that some would say is very incorrect...I only do it how I thought would be easiest, and for me, it works!

  • First, I cook up some rice. I have a rice cooker so I let that go for about 20 minutes, then let the rice cool for a bit before starting.
  • Next, I get out my sushi roll wrappers (nori). Unfortunately, the only ones that are available in my area are the half sized ones, for hand rolls.  I just make do with what I've got!

  • I get the crab meat (mine is the fake crab meat), and mix it with a couple of tbsp of mayonaisse:
  • Then I get the cucumber, peel it, and cut it in half:

  • Then cut it into little spears:

  • Next, I place one sheet of nori on a plate (or on any clean, flat surface):

  • I moisten my hands slightly with water (so the rice will not stick to my hands), and I shape a ball out of the rice, and put it on the nori.

  • Then I press the rice down all over the nori, until it has a thin layer of rice all over it.

  • Then I get a few cucumber spears (you can add avacado as well), and some of the crab meat in the center of the roll:

  • I love wasabi on the rolls, so always add a string of wasabi (be careful with it....if you put too much it is really strong!)

  • Then, simply roll it up, very carefully, but as tightly as possible without tearing the roll.

  • Once rolled, I slice with a rigged knife.

  • And voila!  Sushi is ready to eat.  Enjoy!

Wow, that's neat, I have never had Sushi before. I didn't even know what was in it. Now, I'm kind of curious to try some.

Thanks for posting this Bethany! I got into sushi about 3 years ago when I lived in Hawaii and I eat it as often as I can now. I'd eat it every day if I could, but it's way expensive! Maybe now that I have an idea of how to make it, it won't be so expensive. Is there a big difference in price that you've noticed(making it yourself vs. buying it)??

Oh it's really affordable! I have never really bought sushi...although I have tried it in a Chinese buffet before. So I dont know how much it costs to buy on it's own.

However, for you to compare, here is how much it costs me to make the sushi.

The fake crab meat (more than enough for at least 50 pieces of sushi- I never make that much, but it could if I wanted to), costs me about 2.00.

1 cucumber is about 60-80 cents I think.
1 cucumber can stretch pretty far in the sushi.

2 cups of uncooked rice...well, I buy it bulk, and for about 20 pounds of rice it was about 7.00, I believe. So it was probably less than 1.00 for that much rice.

The sushi rolls are 2.00 for 20 wrappers.

I always have the mayo on hand, so I don't count that as part of the cost.

So for what I buy to make sushi costs, in total, around 5-6 dollars.... and I can make a whole lot for that amount.

oh and it's even cheaper if you use tuna or salmon instead of crab.

Have you rolled them with the rice on the outside? My international ESOL and bible study folks had a sushi making party. One of the students is a professional sushi chef. We used Salmon, Tuna, Talipia, and articifical crab. Lots of spices too. Wonderful. Can I send a picture??
