Pregnancy with Cancer
I have been wanting to make a post about this for a very long time. I want to tell you about my friend, Sandi, who is such a strong woman, and someone who I think will be an inspiration to many women.
I have known Sandi, a sweet woman with now 4 beautiful girls, for about 5 years now. We met when she entered a contest for a baby foot drawing from my website. Since then, we've been very good friends.
For two years, Sandi had been telling me and other friends, on my discussion board, Friendly Faces, that she had been experiencing what she thought were problems with her thyroid. She said many times that her thyroids were getting so large that it was becoming difficult to breathe anymore. I was worried about her, but I had no idea how serious this problem really was. None of us did. She went to doctors for two years who simply assumed the problem was her thyroids, asthma, and other such things.
Sandi found out she was pregnant in April, and she emailed me letting me know. It was a shock, and she was not expecting this at all. She was very excited though about having another child.
Only a few weeks after Sandi found out she was pregnant, she found out some devastating news....all of those problems she previously thought were her thyroid actually indicated a much more serious problem:
Sandi had cancer.
Here is what Sandi posted to us the day she found out what she had:
A nurse (Edit to correct an error- it was actually a specialist, not a nurse) that Sandi talked to, recommended strongly that she have a "therapeutic abortion", telling her that there could be possible side effects to the unborn child, such as defects like cleft lip, or other things that they don't know about yet. She said they hadn't researched it well enough to know for sure, so abortion was probably a 'good idea'.
Sandi is pro-life, and refused to even consider aborting her child. In fact, it actually really hurt her to even have the option presented to her. (I don't blame her...I would have been offended by that option too).
Through the next few months, Sandi went through so much pain....the first few months, her morning sickness was very hard to bear, due to the fact that she had had a couple of surgeries, and because of that the throwing up was very painful for her, more than it would have been otherwise.
But through it all, Sandi found motivation and energy through bonding with her child. Here is a post that she made in May:

Sandi found a wonderful resource while pregnant, which I think every single pregnant cancer patient should find. It's called " Pregnant with Cancer", and the statement on the front page says:
Over the next several months, Sandi went through trial after trial.
Chemo treatments, being life flighted to the hospital, tests, and more tests...she kept us updated on everything.
What amazes me is how positive she was through it all!

Finally, a couple of weeks ago, Sandi announced to us that her little baby, Gabriella, had decided to be born!

Isn't it amazing how God can make even bad situations turn out for the better for everyone, if we just follow His will and trust in His goodness.
God knows what He is doing.
Sometimes we don't always understand why God puts us in situations that are difficult for us to handle. We sometimes become overwhelmed with trials that come our way. But all in all, God always knows what He's doing.
I would love to invite you all to visit Sandi's blog, which has her journal of her cancer/pregnancy experience, and to see what a wonderful thing came out of such a sad situation.
Sandi still has more treatment to go through before this is over with, but thankfully, she has her new little girl to be encouraged by and to love. And her daughters have a sweet little sister to cherish, and know without a doubt that their mother loves them so much she would go through anything for them.

"Girls...it seems fairly certain that I have Hodgkin's disease. My doctor
claims this is good news because it is treatable and very curable. He
believes I'll make a full recovery. He worried that if it was benign a
major surgery would be needed because this tumor is wrapped around
major veins and other important organs. This is hard to take in. I am
pregnant.....and I have cancer. Girls....I don't know what to do. I am
trying to be strong. I have to be. I have to fight this and not let the
sadness consume me.
"
We were so shocked and so worried for Sandi when we found out. All we could do was watch and wait, and pray for her. The baby is doing good so far. She turned on the sono and oh my
goodness. Immediately I saw the baby twisting and turning, wiggling and
waving. I even got a sonogram pic of the baby with his/her hand up
looking like he/she was waving. It was so awesome. I haven't let myself
let go and really feel things will be ok yet but today my OB even told
me she had a friend who had cancer and chemo while pregnant and things
were fine. Even the baby was just fine. I'll have to get an amnio
probably and I have a sonogram every two weeks. I am high risk. I will
get chemo one week and the following week I will see the OB and have a
sonogram. The baby looked great though and I could see the baby so
well. It was so clear. I couldn't believe how much the baby has grown
already. Just amazing. I can't find my favorite baby book. It's the
same kind of book as What to Expect When You're Expecting but it's a
week by week thing. I loved that book. We moved and now it's gone. I
thought I'd let you girls know the baby looks great so far. It's good
news.

Sandi found a wonderful resource while pregnant, which I think every single pregnant cancer patient should find. It's called " Pregnant with Cancer", and the statement on the front page says:
The Pregnant with Cancer Network is a national non-profit organization
for women diagnosed with cancer during pregnancy. Our mission is to
connect women who are pregnant with cancer with other women who have
been pregnant with the same type of cancer. These women are here to
lend support, offer hope and share their experiences with one another
through phone and e-mail conversation.
Sandi was able to connect with another woman who had recently been through the exact same type of cancer as her, and ended up delivering a perfectly healthy little baby boy. Sandi kept telling us that this was such a great thing for her, to be able to connect with someone who knew exactly what she was going through!

Gabriella is here!!!!!!! She decided to make her own birthday! My water
broke at about 3:45 Saturday morning. I have never broken my water
before delivery before. It was so weird. I had to be life flighted
again and Jason had to drive it. I got to the hospital at about 6:30
a.m. and Jason got there about 10 a.m. with my mom. He had to take the
kids to my parents and then drive to the hospital....3 hours in total
driving. I got there in about 30 minutes from our local hospital. I got
to see the sunrise from the helicopter. Wow! I was nervous since I was
only 36 weeks and one day. They gave me the epidural around the time my
hubby got to the hospital.....and good thing. My contractions were
getting painful. I dilated so fast after that and she was born at 2:10
p.m. on November 17th. She is my little sweetie. We love her so much.
We cried and cried when we heard her first strong little cry. She only
took me 10 minutes to push out. What a sweetheart! ha ha She saw special
doctors...preemie docs and NICU docs but was declared healthy enough to
be in a regular nursery and even got to come home with me today. She
weighed in at 6 lbs. 2.8 oz and was 18 inches long.

Isn't it amazing how God can make even bad situations turn out for the better for everyone, if we just follow His will and trust in His goodness.
God knows what He is doing.

Wow, what an amazing story. Sometimes I feel so selfish about the little things that I complain about. Sandi is such a testimony, first of all to the fact that life is precious at any stage, even before birth & also that God is the ultimate physician. He is cable of things beyond our wildest dreams. We just have to trust him. Sandi will be in my thoughts and prayers.

I just thought that needed to be repeated. Imagine how many women, through fear, go through with the abortion when it is completely unnecessary because a "nurse" recommended it as the best option.
Sandi is truly a perfect example of what Motherhood really is.

Imagine bond Gabreille and her mother will have!!
I am really close to my mother. They recommended my mother abort me because of a blood clot in her leg. Well I guess the recommended medication that would get rid of the blood clot and abort me. The doctors said my mother risked losing me and herself if she didn't do this. She said no and here I am.

Bethany,
Thank you for sharing Sandi's story. I will definitely visit her blog and offer words of congratulations and encouragement. My 19-year-old son is a four-year survivor of Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma and now my daughter's best friend (20) is undergoing chemo for Hodgkin's Lymphoma. It is scary, but believe, me, God DOES have a plan.
I am thrilled that Sandi delivered a beautiful, healthy baby girl.

Hi Bethany,
What an amazing woman you just spoke of! Thank you for sharing that uplifting story. I am proud to "know" Sandi and her high moral standards - that is wonderful! I wish they would share more stories like this on our nightly news. She is an inspiration to us all.
And how fitting to have a story about a precious baby when we are soon to be celebrating Jesus' birth! :o)

In a world where everything just seems so wrong, so cold and so harsh, it is moments of pure love like this that keep hope alive. Humanity is not a lost cause. Sandi just proved it. There is still much good, and much to fight for. Thank you Sandi. Thank you.
