Painted Gourd
I was garage saling the other day, and I came upon this lady who was selling gourds. She was selling them for a dollar a piece. I thought I might be able to do something with them, but wasn't sure. I wanted to buy all of them at first...then I decided, Nah, I'll just buy 2. (Cause I never know if I'll get around to doing something or not).
So I bought the two, and then looked up gourd painting on the internet, and saw some cute paintings on gourds, and thought, this may be fun!
So I told James I wanted to make them into birdhouses, and he drilled holes into both of them for me. I had to take all the seeds out, and all of the other stuff inside, which was hard as a rock, and very hard to fit through the tiny bird hole, but eventually, I had it all cleaned out and ready to paint.
I painted it red, and then just started adding new things until I felt it was done. I think it is so cute! I love the way it is shaped...it's soooooo fun!....now I wish that I had all of the other gourds...all of the bright colors would be beautiful around the house or in the yard. I think I might have to try to find that woman's house again and see if she still has them for sale.
Here is one of the gourds that is still waiting to be painted:

And here is the one I finished tonight:

Now you got me thinking about 'The Veggie Tales'. I'm gonna have to watch one today.
Very good!

Hello. That is beautiful. I have wanted to do something like this but was always told that the gourd has to dry in a dark place for up to two years! So with not having a basement or a place that is dry w/o mold, etc I can't do it. I am assuming you didn't have to wait for yours to dry? That is just beautiful, any bird would be happy to call it home, or a mom would be happy to have it in their home LOL
God bless,
Sarah

Thanks Valerie and Sarah!
No I didn't even know they had to dry that long! No wonder people sell them for so much! I was lucky to get them for 1.00 a piece because usually a dried gourd like this one would cost 7-15 dollars!
I'm going to go today and see if I can find that house and buy the rest of them from that lady.
