Is OAMC worth it?

I was asked about how much Once a Month Cooking generally costs us per month today, and thought I'd post the answer here, in case it can help someone else out.

I looked at both of my receipts and together they total $307.00.

I had included extras for lunch in the buggies as well, and I'd have to check and see how much with just the plan it would cost...but alone, the list would probably a little bit less than $300.00.     We'll have to go back every week or so to get milk, eggs, butter, and bread....but everything for dinners is covered with that $307.00, and we have a family of 5, the kids being 7, 5, and 1 1/2.

If you're thinking about trying Once a Month cooking, let me be the first to tell you, it may work for you, and it may not....what's worth it for one person is not always worth it for another.  You might find it more of a hassle than it's worth..... I'm such an unorganized person that this really helps me to get my life in order.    I personally like Once a Month Cooking because it gives me more time to focus on the other things I like to do during the rest of the month!  I hate that feeling every day of, "Oh no, it's almost 5:00, and I haven't figured out what I am going to make for dinner yet!", then rushing through the pantry, trying desperately to find something that I can put together for a meal.....  Sometimes I work well under pressure, but I don't like to have pressure on me every day, if I can help it.    Being able to just pop a meal in the oven, and an hour later, it's ready, and tastes just like I've been slaving in the kitchen all day...well, that just makes my day brighter!   And if I'm able to save a lot of money while doing it, well, all the better!

I still have about 25 more pictures to post, but right now I am actually not at home, so it'll be a few more hours before I can post them here (or it could be tomorrow, depending on how much I have to do once  I get home).

Oh, and if any of you missed it (I did notice a couple of you were asking for the recipes), you can find all the recipes of the food I have pictured at this link.

Or just click the "Once a Month Cooking" link at the left hand corner of this page, and you should find many of my Once a Month Cooking Archives.

Hope this helps!

Hi Bethany, I was wondering about lunches and breakfast. What do you do for those? In your shopping trip, do you include everything you need for all breakfasts and lunches as well? I used to try to shop once a month. But I would always have to go back to the store for produce and milk, so I still felt like I was always at the store. I was just curious.

Yes, I included sandwich meats, peanut butter and jelly, a few loaves of bread, eggs, speghetti sauce and noodles, cheeses, and several other items for different lunches...but they will not last a whole month unfortunately, because the sandwich stuff just doesn't last a month, even if I buy a lot in advance, it tastes better fresh, so I just buy it every 2 weeks or so...sometimes once a week. But I'm not consistent about it by any means. Some weeks are better than others! Some weeks I end up having to go back and purchase something I forgot, and other weeks I'm fortunate enough to have remembered everything ,and I only have to go back for milk and eggs about every 2 weeks instead of 1.
Does any of my rambling make sense? lol I hope so.... I know it's probably not much help...but if you'll go to this link: www.hillbillyhousewife.com, and also, www.menuplanner.com, I think there are some great plans there for lunches! Also in some of my recent posts, some commenters posted some awesome links that I need to put in my sidebar.

I had never heard of OAMC until I started coming here. I think I may give it a try someday though. It seems like a nifty way to have meals available throughout the month! I don't have any kids but I'm usually too lazy to make supper, so this could definitely help! I'm glad I can stop by and read about how it works for you (The pictures are always great too!)

Hi I found your site after you posted about bagels on Tammy's site. We've been making bagels a lot.
I have so enjoyed your OAMC posts. I'm in the midst of planning a dinner plan. I've done breakfast OAMC plans but you've inspired me to get the dinner plan done. I haven't done this since for a long time. I love OAMC when it is done and it does save us so much money and time

Keep the recipes, websites and photos coming they are great!!

Hi, maybe I am doing something wrong but, the link for the recipes (if you don't have microsoft works) just shows a list of ingredients. I don't know if anyone else is having this problem but I just thought I would let you know.

Serena, that's most likely my mistake. I will go back and correct it... I think I probably put the ingredients in the recipes page, and the recipes in the ingredients page. It's all my left-handedness in action! LOL Or maybe it's mommy brain. Who knows!

    Thank you, Ms Paradis!

Caroline, I'm so glad that you have enjoyed the bagel recipe, and I'm glad you also enjoy Once a Month cooking!

    Tiffany, thank you!
