Butter Bread and a little lambkin
Yesterday was a long day! The kids were kind of uncooperative with their mathwork yesterday for some reason...so the day seemed to stretch out forever, especially since the phone kept ringing and Noah kept fussing about every little thing he could think of!
They eventually did finish though (maybe they just didn't get enough sleep or something) and Noah finally was put to bed - apparently he needed a nap!- and then I was able to get some things accomplished.
I let the kids help me sew something...we made a little purse for Bonnie which was very simple... Caleb did an excellent job with the sewing machine! Bonnie is learning to handle it as well but I think it may be a little bit of time before she really understands how to work it - her little legs are so short anyway that it's hard for her to reach the pedal!
(We did get her a little tiny sewing machine though, which we'll be letting her use as soon as we figure out how to use it)
After they got done helping me sew, I did some sewing of my own, and made Bonnie a little "Lambkin", which you can get the pattern for here.

After that, I let Caleb help me make some braided butter bread.... it was again, a very simple recipe, and ended up tasting great! I love how pretty braided bread is too... here is a picture of it after it was braided and left for the second rise:

Then, here is a picture of one of the loaves after it was baked...these were sooo pretty!

And here is a picture of the slices....right before we spread some butter over them and ate them. Delicious!

Here is the recipe for Butter Bread:
1 stick butter
1 cup milk
2 packages yeast
3 tablespoons sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
2 large eggs
6-7 cups bread flour
Melt the butter and warm the milk....add yeast and let sit for about 2 minutes, then stir and add sugar, salt, the eggs, and slowly add flour till it is a firm dough.
Knead for 10 minutes, then let rise for an hour.
Punch down, split in half, and separate each half into three sections. Roll sections, and braid them.
Let braided loaves rise for about 30 minutes, then brush with an egg white glaze.
Place in the oven at 375 for 30-35 minutes.

How sweet is that little lamb! I adore it.
The bread looks delicious! I love that you let the kids cook with you, it is one our favorite things to do together.
I hope you are feeling better!

I really enjoy your site and all the recipes and everything. I had a question on the Once a month cooking. How much do you end up spending on it? I have a family of 6 and I am trying to keep my spending down to 400 a month for food and paper goods. Do you think it is possible?

Thank you, Jill! Things have been much better the last couple of weeks.
Becky, I hope your bread comes out delicious!
Jodi, With my first Once a Month cooking list, I ended up spending only about 240.00 for the whole month. Of course, I still had to buy lunch items and miscellaneous things, but the main part of the grocery shopping was done for less than 300. Including all of the diapers, milk, misc. that I needed, I think it was only about 300.00, but give another 50.00 for other things that come up that I'd need throughout the month. I think you could easily do it, you just have to figure out ways to make due with less.
oh a great site you'd probably like is www.hillbillyhousewife.com...she has some great grocery and recipe plans which are VERY affordable...I think that she has a plan for 35 dollars a week, for a large family!
So check that site out if you get a chance...hope it's helpful!
